Reading Scheme Links

Ladybird

The home of Peter and Jane… yes they are still about! – good stuff on the pages that are linked from this one too.

Oxford Reading Tree

The BBC series, magic key, stems from this… designed to be less “sexist and dry” according to one page, than a certain scheme you probably learnt with!

Jolly Learning

Lots of schools use Jolly Phonics and it is advocated by at least one Montessori Site too.

Reading a-z

Hooked on Phonics

Startreading

The book Teach your child to read in 100 Easy Lessons, the DISTAR reading scheme, is described here.

Cambridge Reading

Another reading scheme – not one i know a lot about to be honest!

Lots of people love this – each letter is represented by a character drawn around it. There are vast quantities of learning merchandise to accompany it too.

Bricks and Mortar

An online, downloadable reading scheme

Other Stuff

Moving Alphabet

Now this is funny – moving gifs of every letter to download. I shall try to add some to the page when I get a chance.

Teach a Child To Read

An informative site suggesting ways to go about teaching your child to read.

Rhyming and Word play

This is a simple but clever little page that intoduces some of the oddities of the English Language into games. If your child is interested in endings that rhyme and why dear and deer sound the same, visit and enjoy!

Nature Walks

I’m afraid this page is unashamedly English in content – I really wanted to collate some resources for finding places to go but there was only any point in doing ones relevant to me – however, if anyone ever wants to supply sites that are useful for other countries, I will happily give them webspace. The links below are all related to places to go in the UK or peculiar to UK species and environment. What I would like is a guide on how to hellp children and parents get the best from a nature walk.

English Nature – One of the UKs main Societies relating to our countryside.

The National Trust – as the above but also with a lot of stately homes and gardens

Woodland Trust –

CountryLovers

Ramblers Association – Urban Walks

A Walk on the Wildside – a snapshot of nature walks

The GetOutGuide – erm…. self explanatory i hope!

Royal Society for the Protection of Birds – finding nature reserves and information on birds

Trees & Leaves

Desperate Plea – i haven’t really found what I wanted at all for this page – i wanted outlines of UK trees in different seasons with pictures of their leaves, flowers and fruit, all in fairly simple line drawings. If you know of some, please let me know! I have only used these pages fairly briefly so please let me know which ones deserve a golden egg!

There are many ways of home educating children and some of them involve using entirely, or partly, pre-prepared curriculum from companies who put together sets of books or appropriately graded activities and subjects for simplicity and a cohesive form of structured study. Within these curriculum supplies there is often the opportunity to be extremely flexible with how you personally use the … Read More about Curriculum Suppliers
