The Best Play Dough Recipes on the Internet.

May 10, 2015 By Merry

Homemade play was a staple of our early home educating life and the recipe (which in the days before Pinterest or even Google) I learned from playgroup teachers and has remained my go to one ever since.

Playdough Recipe

2 cups of plain flour
1 cup of salt
2 cups of water
2 tablespoons of sunflower oil
1-2 tablespoons of cream of tartar (I prefer more rather than less but tends to depend on what was in the pot!)

Chuck it all in a pan on a low heat and stir till a solid and non sticky mess then lift it out on to a floured worktop and gently knead, adding more flour if needs be until the ideal consistency. I tended to make double quantities (4 children) and then divide it into quarters and add food colouring and essential oils to the different lumps to alter it, for example yellow colouring and lemon oil, green colouring with sage or rosemary oil, blue or purple with lavender oil, orange with mandarin or red with patchouli.

Now, I never had ANY problems using a drop of any of these in playdough with my girls but there is more information about these days and you might choose to consult the ‘ essential oils that are safe with children‘ list here and make some alterations for the two I used for green.

playdough

Things having moved on, lots of clever people have made play dough a hugely inventive thing now so here are some popular alternatives from around the internet.

6 Great Play Dough Recipes

No Cook Playdough from The Imagination Tree.

Cloud Dough is a soft, fluff mouldable play stuff but as it is made with baby oil, you need to be sure it won’t get eaten.

Gluten Free Play Dough – with a coeliac in our wider family, this is a happy find as I’ve felt very guilty when she has come to our house and not been able to play with what was already made.

Ice Cream Dough is made with hair conditioner and cornstarch and apparently looks and smells like ice cream.

Sand Play Dough has a a great sensory feel and is quite different.

UK Solid Jelly Play Dough sounds divine and seems to be very popular as an idea and something that feels and smells quite different.

The great thing about the internet of course is there is now Pinterest and so a wealth of ideas and recipes can all be collated in one place. Take a look.

It has to be said, my kids still love shop bought playdohas a treat, so if nothing else will do, you could always use this affiliate link to buy some.

6 Educational Websites You Need to Know.

April 7, 2015 By Merry

My home education resource knowlege was once pretty much second to none. For lots of reasons, most of which you could read about extensively on my blog if you so wished, I’ve not been up to date for the last few years. With home ed once again on my horizon and a desire to make this site something more like it always should have been, here are my recommendations for blogs and websites you absolutely can’t afford to be without.

newduckgroupMuddlePuddle was alwyas about collecting resources together as well as making new content, so just to get started again, here are 6 of the best websites for educating and entertaining little people that I know. Feel free to send more suggestions.

Science Sparks

A fabulous website full of easy to do science experiments for children at home, broken down into handy sections that makes it easy to find what you need.

The Imagination Tree

Written by a SAHM teacher and filled with early years ideas, sensory play and discovery activities.

Nurture Store

A very professional website filled with lesson plans, ideas for themes and learning and more – written by a home educator.

Red Ted Art

Themed art and craft ideas using loads of recycled products and highly innovative. Maggy mixes artists with crafting and uses technology as innovatively as she does toilet rolls!

Edspire

Beautiful early years learning opportunities and small world play from a lovely ex-teacher with child centred learning at the centre of her ideas.

Activity World

It’s been going as long as MuddlePuddle (but she kept hers up to date!), Activity Village is full of activities and printables for educating and entertaining little ones.

Edit: of course, then people reminded me of others 😀

Rainy Day Mum

Educational resource site with all sorts of different activities and ideas.

Playing By the Book

Book reviews and lots of activities to do alongside reading them.

I think I’ll be updating this page a lot!

Tudor Resources

Our Henry VIII project gave us lots of opportunity to explore the family tree of the Tudors, visit places they lived, worked and were held captive and find out more about life and health during the Tudor times. We’ve amassed plenty of Tudor resources during that time and made some of our own too.

Tudor Family Tree Picture Cards

Set 1
Set 2
Set 3

I made these cards with several intentions. First, most obviously, you can print out two sets and use them as matching cards, play simple snap etc – or you can use them to find groups and correlations between portraits….
For example

  • Group the wives of Henry and those who were not wives of Henry.
  • Group pictures of Henry VIII against all the other males.
  • Group his children.
  • Group those who come above Henry VIII in his family tree.
  • Order the portraits of Henry into age order.
  • Group the pictures of his children into order of age or succession.
  • Put the wives in order, inserting the “wife” who wasn’t (Christina of Denmark, before Anne of Cleves).
  • Create a “family tree” on the carpet.

Books to Inform the Educator.

Alison Weir

I have read nearly all of her books now and they have been both fascinating and useful for supplying endless bits of info to Fran. She writes with the intention of bring the people to “life” and she succeeds – I can highly highly recommend her.

6 Wives of Henry – a brilliant, if initially heavy, read which explains the wives scenario in intimate detail.

Children of Henry – an absorbing documentary of the 4 monarchs immediately after Henry, including Lady Jane Grey.

Elizabeth 1 – fabulous – a really intimate portrayal of the “Virgin Queen”

Complete Genealogy – everyone, every baby, every wife – in glorious detail – you might want Tony Robinson’s book with you for lighter commentary too!

Princes in the Tower – detailed analysis of the evidence produces a convincing and intriguing argument.

Henry’s Court – about to read it – am told its excellent.

Wars of the Roses – about to read it.

She has since written several Tudor fiction books too.

Philippa Gregory

From The Other Boleyn girl onwards, the writing of her Tudor and War of the Roses books is im[impeccable and brilliantly researched. She occasionally twists stories to give a personal  take on events but only within the bounds of reason.

MuddlePuddle Printables

pudandmoo

MuddlePuddle is the home of Moo the Goose and Pud (like Pud-ding) the duckling. They get up to a lot of fun around here and want to share some of it with you. Want to play? (2015 – these are vintage 2002 creations so are rather dated now).

Maths
Early maths skills printable worksheets plus Odd One Out Printable – the top four rows are the puzzle—the bottom four are the control of error, so the child can check their answers. Fold the page in half—or cut it, then ask the child to pick out the one in each horizontal row which is different to the others in the row, by drawing a box around the odd one out. The first is based on colour change – please give me your opinions.

Autumn Game – what can you find?

Print off the instructions, the main picture and the matching cards for a game of look and see!

Matching Cards Set 1 – set of seven images within shapes to match and sort.

Matching Cards Set 2  – as above in complimenting colours

Matching Cards Set 3 Page1 Page 2 Page 3 Page 4 Page 5 Page 6 Page 7 Page 8 – a set of images based on real butterflies with Latin names, but they appear more exotic than your average UK.

Tudor Clip Art – several printable Tudor themed pictures.

MuddlePuddle Worksheets

Slightly to my horror, my daughter seems to really like worksheets! We have been using Singapore Maths at the Early Bird level (see Maths for more info) and backing it up with some UK shop bought books, such as the Letts ones. As these are quite expensive, I thought I would have a go at my own, using the topics that we cover in Singapore as a guide and spending time on the areas that Fran is finding harder. We are backing all this up with practical work as well as I don’t really like purely worksheet based stuff, but it does seem to be working for her – so long as she sees it as a game, I am happy!

Please note: these were made in 2002 and are distinctly vintage!

Here are the three sets, split into topics – there are six sheets in each.

I have used coloured graphics but you could print them in greyscale to save ink.
